Captain’s NewsletterOctober/November 07What’s coming up? The Captains Dinner Dance is on Saturday 17th November this year. Following the success of last year, we are sticking to the same venue and same band. I do hope that as many members and their guests are able to join me for what I hope will be a very enjoyable evening. If you wish to attend please put your name on the list on the club noticeboard by the October 31st (or e-mail me direct). We will also be awarding this year's major prizes during the evening. The AGM on Thursday 29th November will be preceded by a Presentation evening. Not only does this bring the club year to a close by awarding cups and vouchers to the year’s successful golfers, but it also has the added advantage of bumping up the incoming Captain’s drinks bill!! I hope you will take the opportunity to attend, and to vote on any proposals brought to improve the running of the club. Almost all the Knockout finals are to be held on the same day this year (Sunday 21st October), along with a team game. Support for the finalists would be welcome, especially for those competing in the Captains prize who will have endured 36 holes of play! Saturday 13th October sees a competition organised by the complex to mark the retirement of Joe Newman as Head Greenkeeper. Players from Easthampstead, Downshire and Easthampstead Ladies will take part. We have been blessed over the years with a fantastic course, and much of the credit for this must go to Joe so I am sure that all members will join me in wishing Joe a long and happy retirement. We then enter November, with the 1st leg of the Winter League to be contested on November 3rd. Information Please remember, if you win one of the major trophies, they must be returned to the club within a month, so that they can be displayed in the trophy cabinet. (Please bring them up on a Thursday night or a competition day and give to Reg Todd or myself) With the new cabinet finally on the wall we need to ensure that we can fill it!! I am sure most members are aware, but we have a great web site (www.ehgc.info). As well as tee times and results (including the knockouts for the first time) there is tons of information about what’s going on in the club. It even includes all the results going back to 2000, for those members like me who cannot remember when they last won anything!! Driver D-Day. The time is quickly approaching when those of us still swinging away with ‘Hot’ drivers are going to have to dig their hands in their pockets and find a big stick that fits the R & A’s rules. January 1st is D-Day for those clubs that have been on the banned list for pro’s since 2003. They can no longer be used in our club competitions after that date. It is the personal responsibility of each member to ensure that their club confirms to the rules of golf. There is information on the R&A website about which clubs conform, and I am sure all the golf magazines will be full of this issue in the next couple of months. However, I am sure that Richard and his team in the pro-shop will be the best source of advice, as well as having some great deals available. Slow play was an issue in November last year as the nights closed in and leaves covered the ground. Please be aware that this is always the most difficult time of year, and take all the usual common sense measures to keep play moving. Competitions Recent competition winners have been: - Vincent Roughan (EHGC Open), Scott Weaver (Captains Day), Ronnie Turner (August Medal & September Bogey), Lewis Jones (Colin Parrot), Nick Murtagh (Sept Medal), Ian Goodall (Club Championship), Captains Team (Captain v Vice-Captain challenge). Congratulations also to Nick Mault on a fantastic years golf that has resulted in him being this year’s ‘Player of the Year’ What’s been happening? As I have not been able to keep up with my aim of writing these newsletters every 6-8 weeks, a great deal has happened since the last one!! However some of the highlights have been: - Our first ever Race Night, attended by over 80 members. We raised a record £700 for the Captains charity (The Cystic Fibrosis Trust) Thanks again to Graham Dibley, Mike Hussey, Roger Cotton, Paul Dickinson and Derrick Miles for great organisation. The 2nd of the ‘mini-away days’ was held at Donnington Valley on May 24th, quickly followed by the main annual club away day on June 6th at Calcot Park. We also had some great results in the externals this year. The 5th annual club tour ran from Sept 22nd to 29th, based at Alvor on the Algarve. All 40 members and partners who went had a great time (especially Lloyd Spencer, who became the first tourist to win the Silver Putter twice). I have probably missed plenty out, which will teach me to be more disciplined in getting these newsletters out on time. I am sure that next year’s Captain Chris Joseph will be much more efficient than me!!! And Finally… As this is my last newsletter as Captain I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee members for all their hard work and support over my year. The smooth running of the club is dependant on them giving up a great deal of their free time to organise things. Their commitment is not necessarily noticed by all, but take it from me, they all do a fantastic job. I have really enjoyed my year as Captain. It has been a great honour to lead the club, and it has made me realise even more than before what a fantastic club we have. I hand over to Chris at the end of November confident that he will be a terrific Captain, and that the club will continue to go from strength to strength.
