Ian Goodall

EHGC Captain

Junior Captain

Congratulations to Jake Staines on becoming Junior Captain for the year 2009. Jake joined the club in 2007; was Junior Club Champion in 2008 and now has a handicap down to 17 and falling. For anyone who doesn’t know Jake he’s the one with one orange and one yellow shoelace who likes practicing chipping left-handed with the club upside-down.

Wednesday/Thursday Sessions

Some of you may have noticed a slightly more organised and disciplined approach to our evening sessions lately. The professionals at the complex have been asked to keep a closer check on your progress lately with the intention of getting more of you out on the course in competitions. We should also start to see some handicaps tumble a little bit. Meanwhile we should still have plenty of time for enjoying just hitting golf balls and on the pitch-and-putt but expect some organised short game/long game drills most sessions. And we all need the practice.

External Matches

Ellie has spent quite a lot of time and phone-calls lately contacting neighboring clubs with a view to organising some inter-club matches. You can expect to hear something very soon. With this in mind we’re also looking at buying in some stock of club shirts and hope to be able to offer them to you at about £10 per shirt. They will be in the club blue with a gold Easthampstead logo. Let us know if you’re interested in buying one.

Membership Renewals

Just a brief reminder that the club year runs from January to December each year and subs this year are £18. There are still some renewals outstanding for 2009 so please see Allan if you’ve not renewed.

Weekend Competitions

The entries for weekend competitions have been much better this year with 10 or 12 entering each competition. Most of the competitions are Saturday lunchtime since this seems to suit most of you. If that’s not the case mention it to Allan and we’ll see if we can include some Sunday afternoon competitions. The competitions are still all run as Stableford since the Medal format limits handicaps to 28.

BB&O County Juniors

And finally we’re very proud to have 2 of our Juniors accepted into the County Junior programme. Very well done to George McKernan and Scott Proctor for progressing to County level training. The BB&O are running a programme at different clubs, of which we are one, with regular County coaching. This is the first step for George and Scott along the long road to golfing success. We wish them both all the best. There will be a training day later this year where the County programme will be explained and any Junior can attend. We’ll keep you informed

(BB&O stands for Berks, Bucks and Oxon which is the county organisation we belong to and pay our subscriptions).

Junior GolfMark

You may have noticed a lot more paperwork recently. This is all to do with our application for GolfMark recogition from the English Golf Union. To pass this needs complying with a lot of procedures – all in your interest really – to do with Child Protection, Health and Safety and Equity in our treatment of Junior golfers. We’re hoping to get final signoff on Monday 11th May and if that happens the Downshire Golf Complex will be very happy with us. Guaranteed.
